Vientiane - Xieng Khouang(B, L, D)

Early morning breakfast. Transfer to domestic airport for flight to Xieng Khouang . Transfer to hotel in Phonesavanh, the capital city of Xieng Khouang province which was heavy bomded during Vietnam war. The local people use intact bomb casings as pillars for new structures and as fence posts. Visit the PLAIN OF JARS, a large area about 8 km from Phonesavanh town where huge jars of unknown origin are scattered about. The weight of jars everage about 600 kg to one ton, but the biggest one weights as much as 6 tons. The jars appear to have been fashioned from solid stone, but there is disagreement on this point. Some say they were used as sarcophagi but according to a local story, they were used to store fermented rice during the time of King Angkham. This king, supposedly a cruel fellow, ruled the area until Khung Jeuang came down from south China and deposed him. To celebrate the victory, Khung Jeuang ordered his people to construct huge jars to fermenting rice wins. French archaeologists and researchers, after a thorough examination, came to the
conclusion that these famous jars are stone burial urns and the plain of jars is in fact an ancient cemetery where ashes were buried more than 2,000 years ago. Ashes, stone axes, bronze ornaments and ceramics - all offerings to the dead - were found by researchers at the site. There are still over one hundred jars remaining
in the area. Return to Phonesavanh for LUNCH. Afternoon, visit Hmong and other minorities of Lao loum(Lowland) villages. Late afternoon, return to Phonesavanh. DINNER and ACCOMMODATION.
